Resistance

Sounds sexier than "Scared Mage Communes."

The Resistance is the collective name for a multitude of anti-Earth Federation movements that existed ever since Gehenna.  The Resistance claimed that it was the successor to the mages of the Traditions, who fought the Technocracy, ever since the Age of Reason (17th Century CE).  Their goals have always been for freedom for mages and werecreatures from the Tech Infantry draft, but beyond that, their ideals have always been murky and their methods questionable.

History[]

Early History[]

With the sacrifice of Eisenstein in destroying the Bug attack in 2000, this caused a massive awakening among a previous unbelieving majority.  Mages, werewolves, and vampires existed.  The Traditions, having suffered and been almost defeated by the Technocracy, took the opportunity to strike openly.  In response, the Technocracy convinced the Security Council of the United Nations to dispense with Peacekeepers and create a new multinational force called the Tech Infantry.  Their open war was soon overshadowed, however, by the rise of the antediluvians.  Hence the war for controlling magick was lumped in with the war called Gehenna.

After the Traditions were defeated, many fled to the Eastern Bloc, whom they had helped in keeping their independence from the newly formed Earth Federation.  Others served the Black Hand in the Wraithlands.  The ones that didn't hid and were eventually caught or killed by the Tech Infantry Special Service.

Founding of the Resistance[]

It was the invention of the ion drive that saved those mages who refused to serve the Federation.  Able to spread to distant colonies, their numbers grew quietly, out of sight of the TI recruiters.  The invention of the hyperspace beacon allowed for the FedNet (or just Net for short), which in turn allowed these recalcitrant mages to form alliances.  Although the old Traditions were destroyed and their ways forgotten, a new group was able to communicate and coordinate for the first time.

These early Resistance cells were mostly local and limited to planetary operations.  However, their first great success was in creating an underground railroad to smuggle out tagged mages who were hunted by the Tech Infantry.  This allowed their numbers to grow.  Eventually, some cell leaders were able to carve out safe zones on worlds or moons outside the Fed's eyes.

Marko Vitek[]

It was the leadership of Marko Vitek that changed the Resistance from an anarchistic organization to a unified faction.  Famous as the sergeant of the 86th Platoon, as well as being the test patient for Project Vitek, he already had a reputation for fighting authority due to his role in the 1st Civil War.  In the chaos that ensued, Vitek fled the Tech Infantry, and was welcomed by the Resistance.  He managed to convince several cells to unite and convert Earth from the wreckage that it was after the Bug Asteroid of 2199.  His efforts created the biggest safe zone of all time, granting the Resistance a headquarters and central location from which to expand.

The Federation was not about to let their opposition claim such a choice prize.  The Tech Infantry placed a legion on the planet to drive the Resistance from the planet called simply Operation Earth.  Although the Resistance rarely had more than ten thousand people on Earth at any time, their continued guerilla attacks kept the Fed from fully reclaiming the planet for decades.

The Liberation[]

With Vitek firmly acknowledged as leader of the movement, he used Earth as a launching pad, expanding their numbers and reach through the ever-expanding Federation.  It is uncertain when Maeve Harrington, CEO of the megacorp Harrington Enterprises, contacted her old drill sergeant Vitek.  However, it was to become a successful partnership.  She provided the Resistance with equipment and money and, in turn, the Resistance provided her with valuable inteligence.  Harrington used this information to carve out her own political faction, place her husband Lwan Eddington as Marshal, and begin to shape the Federation into a free and democratic government.

However, after the 2nd Triumvirate foiled her plans, she realized that she had only one move left.  Throwing the massive monetary and technological weight of her megacorp towards the Resistance, she gave them the capability to overthrow the Federation.  Marko Vitek took the opportunity, declared their movement "The Liberation," and started the 2nd Civil War.

The first few years went well for the Liberation; the 2nd Triumvirate was defeated and the civilian government was shattered.  In desperation, the Tech Infantry took over the government, and fought the Liberation through a series of decisive campaigns.  Although the Liberation had managed to seize control of several systems, their primitive fleet was no match for a determined assault by Earth Fleet.  After seven years of bitter fighting, and the betrayal of Liberation secrets due to Maeve Harrington, the war ended.  Vitek initially was thought to have been killed in the last year of the war, but he turned up again on Earth, their only remaining stronghold.

3rd Civil War[]

For years afterwards, the remnants of the Resistance struggled to survive.  Even Earth was in dispute, and it seemed as if the Tech Infantry would finally prevail.  However, Vitek managed to lead them to victory, kick the TI legion off the planet's surface, and build a new fortress city called Sanfran (on the ruins of San Francisco).  The Earth Fleet kept them in check by surrounding Earth with a ring of attack satellites.

The Resistance expanded into the new frontier worlds, gaining supporters in the liberated Frontier Worlds Territory and Eastern Bloc, as well as rebuilding their network.  They became strong enough to secede the galactic northwest from the Federation during the 3rd Civil War, with assistance from the Horadrim community, including Vin Dane.  However, their brief resurgence was soon crushed by a task force under the command of Erich Von Shrakenberg, who finally destroyed Earth by driving its moon into its surface.  With the destruction of their main base, open warfare against the Fed ceased, the systems rejoined the government, and the Resistance went underground.

Clarke's Federation[]

Marko Vitek had died when Earth was destroyed, splintering the faction into individual cell leaders, none of which were able to unite or draw on large resources.  They spent the next twenty years rebuilding their underground railroad system, with the Raptors hot on their heels.  Eventually, system networks were established, but it remained only a shadow of its former glory.  They allied with remnants of the Eastern Bloc hierarchy when the Bloc was destroyed by the Vin Shriak and later occupied by the Federation.

With the Caal Invasion and collapse of the Federation, the Resistance cells rose up as the new governments, declaring their independence from the new Holy Terran Empire.  These cells realized that they were too weak to continue alone, and so the former Resistance network became the Terran Republic, thanks to the efforts of Kazimir Vitek.

Terran Republic[]

Unfortunately, democracy wasn't all it was cracked up to be.  Despite Vitek's efforts to unite the cells and establish a new constitution for the infant republic, the cell leaders functioned as warlords on the planets that they controlled at the end of the Earth Federation.  With the death of Vitek so soon afterwards, the successor leadership never managed to unify their forces long enough to defeat the Imperial Fleet.

Holy Terran Empire[]

With the discrediting of many of the Resistance groups, there is no unified organization.  There are several groups of corsairs and terrorist cells, but despite the efforts of Aaron Roquefort to unify them, their efforts remain scattered.

Season Eight Alternate Timeline[]

With the fall of the Earth Federation and its replacement as a centralized Human empire by the Middle Kingdom, what Resistance cells survived the Vin Shriak Invasion united with the remnants of Federation loyalists under the leadership of Arthur Clarke.

Y3K Era[]

The role of a centralized, organized resistance movement to the all-powerful central government of the Holy Terran Empire was filled by an organization known ironically as the Tech Infantry, headed by Miro Creed and Fialla Spencer.

Behind the Scenes[]

The Resistance was developed as a storyline, probably thanks to the Maquis from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They continued to be the source of black ops stories, political machinations, and possible redemption for the TI universe.  But if they won, what's the point of playing Tech?
